Video Review - Tony Horton’s Ab Ripper X

I recently used Tony Horton’s Ab Ripper X video for a couple of exercise sessions. As the title suggests, it’s an exercise video that focuses primarily on the abdominal muscles. The abs are a group of muscles that don’t require long bouts of work and as such, the routine is really quite short. But was it any good? Read on to find out…

Tony Horton, a celebrity trainer, fitness professional and guru, and host of many Beach Body exercise videos, leads a group of lean individuals in serious sweat attacks in his P90X series of workout videos. As I mentioned, the Ab Ripper X video, which is the last in a series of 12 muscle building routines, is a short workout - just 15 minutes. But any longer and you’d be in serious pain afterwards.

For the routine, Tony takes you through 11 different exercises from bycicle-kicks to crunchy frogs and fifer scissors (yes - those are what they’re named). He ocassionally joins in with the workouts, but mostly walks around the room, trying to keep the other 3 individuals in the video from giving up. Noteably, at some points it looks very much like the others are struggling to keep up with the intensity at which the exercises are being done. Needless to say, however, by the looks of their physiques, they’ve all been working on their abs for quite some time and if any of them are having difficulty getting through some crunchy frogs, you’d think that I’d be toast - which admittedly I was after the video.

For a good three quarters of Ab Ripper X, I have a hard time keeping up. Even though it’s short, each time I’ve done the video, Ive broken out in quite a sweat right off the bat. However, I try to keep up and by the end of the routine, I can tell that it’s hit my core muscles hard and the following day reaffirms that.

As far as an instructor, Tony Horton is tough to figure out. He’s certainly not all hyper like some video instructors, which is a good thing. At the same time though, Tony seems to be more or less unconcerned about the routine. Perhaps its because it’s the last video and he just wants to get it over with. Who knows. Overall, however, the Ab Ripper X video is a really great routine and is probably the only core workout you really need in a given week. If you really want to work on your abs, then the Ab Ripper is the way to do it.
